JAMES MARTIN
Sculptures at Magpie Springs

ARTIST’S STATEMENT

James was a Sculptor who worked figuratively.  His fascination with representations of the human figure was the major theme of his work for many years.  A particular interest was portrait sculpture, and his work expanded increasingly in that direction.  His sculptures range in size from small-scale sketch figures through to life-size portrait busts and commissioned monumental works.

In 2005, James was awarded the commission to design and make a memorial sculpture in bronze to commemorate the Vietnam War.  The Vietnam Veterans Memorial was unveiled in 2006.  It stands adjacent to the Torrens Parade Ground in Adelaide.  James was commissioned by The National Trust of South Australia, Minlaton Branch, to make a life-size bronze figure of Captain Harry Butler, an early aviator and local hero, to be installed in the town’s main street opposite the Museum.  (When James died, this commission was passed to his dear friend, sculptor and bronze caster Tim Thomson.  Tim’s sculpture of Harry Butler was unveiled in Minlaton in August 2015.)

James worked mainly in clay and then either fired the clay figures, or moulded them for casting into other material.  He had a bronze casting practice, using the lost-wax bronze casting technique, and many of his works are cast in bronze.

In later years, James continued to exhibit in Australia and overseas, and completed and exhibited a series of abstract/stylised work that includes large outdoor cement figures and small indoor terracotta pieces.

James was a lecturer in the Sculpture Department of the Adelaide Central School of Art (ACSA).  He taught extensively at both ACSA and the South Australian School of Art, University of South Australia
